Welcome

Welcome to the Massachusetts Silver Legislature!
Through an Executive Order in 1980, following the creation of the National Silver Haired Congress in Washington, the non-partisan Massachusetts Silver Haired Legislature (MASHL) was first organized with the assistance of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs and then Governor Edward J. King. At that time, very few laws protected the elderly and disabled and there was a great need for advocacy and reform.

Since 1980, SHL members filed, supported and assisted in the passage of important legislation protecting older Americans. One example is the background checks now required for individuals working with the elderly in homes, institutions and elder facilities. Laws proposed and passed included legislation to protect elders from scams, exploitation of elder assets and property, unnecessary isolation, moving of elders without their knowledge or consent, the theft of property and abusive guardianship practices.

Following the disruption and restrictions of the past years of Covid19, more must be done and the challenges faced by the elderly continue. There’s a critical need for new protections and the enforcement of existing laws. We at the Massachusetts Silver Legislature seek input from older adults, the disabled and affected families in order to determine the scope of existing issues and problems and to devise effective remedies and solutions, legislatively or otherwise.

It is extremely important that we reach retiring individuals and their families. If you are aware of problems experienced by older adults in your towns and districts, we would appreciate hearing from you.

Still reeling from the Covid19 pandemic and subsequent restrictions and months of isolation, the Silver Legislature is launching its 2022 membership drive. We welcome you to become an active volunteer representative or associate member from your town districts. You may contact us by email at masilverlegislature@gmail.com. Help us make a difference! Thank you.

Sincerely,

Sally M. Hoyt
Senate President
